US expresses support in Burma anniversary message
Last Updated:
The United States has highlighted its support for efforts to establish democracy in military-run Burma, in a statement marking Burma's 61st anniversary of independence.
US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack has expressed Washington's warm wishes to the Burmese people as they commemorated the anniversary of independence from Britain on January 4, 1948.
He said the US remembers its own struggle for independence, and says it supports "the peaceful efforts of people everywhere to exercise freely their universal human rights".
Thousands of Burmese have been killed in the past four decades under military rule, including 31 people during pro-democracy protests in late 2007.
Australia goes to the polls on August 21.
