Canadian activists furious at nuclear talks with India

Anti-nuclear activitists in Canada have criticised the government for pursuing a series of nuclear deals with India.

The ABC's Dan Karpenchuk reports that critics warn Canada's reputation as an international advocate of nuclear non-proliferation has been tarnished by the negotiations.

Public anger erupted after Canada's international trade minister made a four-day visit to India recently, after which he announced the two countries were close to a formal deal on nuclear transfers.

The deal would see Canada selling nuclear reactors and uranium to India, in a potentially lucrative arrangement that follows the lifting by Canada of a 34-year moratorium on such transfers.

Activists have rejected promises of safeguards, saying any civilian nuclear aid to India could potentially be shifted into New Delhi's military program.

The peace organisation Project Ploughshares wants a written commitment from India that it won't test another nuclear bomb, and verifiable limits on its stockpiling of uranium.
