Delay to Afghan poll necessary: NATO

NATO has welcomed the announcement that Afghanistan's presidential election is to be delayed, saying the alliance will now have enough time to deploy extra troops to protect the voters.
Afghanistan's Independent Election Commission has announced the presidential election will not be held until August 20.
The commission made the decision after discussions with the government and international security forces.
The United States is sending thousands of extra troops into Afghanistan, in response to increasing attacks in the south and the east of the country.
But the election commission says without security there can be no voting.
The poll has also been delayed because of budgetary and logistical problems.
