Tibetan monk allegedly shot dead in China

Acitivists and residents in China's southwest say a Tibetan monk was shot by police after he set himself on fire in protest against Chinese rule.

The London-based Free Tibet group has told the AFP newsagency the monk, in his late twenties, was shot after he set himself alight in a Tibetan-populated town in Sichuan suh-CHWUN province.

Local residents confirmed that police fired shots but it's not known if the monk survived.

The alleged shooting comes less than a before the 50th anniversary of a failed Tibetan uprising that led the Dalai Lama to flee to India.
