Australia's Environment Minister Peter Garrett has defended the government's efforts to try to stop commercial whaling.

Japan is set to resume imports of whale meat from Norway for the first time in 20 years.

It follows a similiar agreement to resume imports from Iceland, which is the only other country involved in commercial whaling.

Mr Garrett says the Government has committed tens of millions of dollars to try to stop whaling.

"I go to the IWC [International Whaling Commission] in June of this year resolutely opposed to the commercial killing of whales, resolutely opposed to killing whales so called in the name of science and with a substantial reform agenda that we've been putting forward plus our strong diplomatic engagement," said Mr Garrett.

Australia goes to the polls on August 21.
