The Australian Government is keeping secret its moves to free an Australian hostage being held with a Canadian citizen in Somalia.

An official insists they cannot say what steps they are taking to secure the release of the Australian because of fears for his life.

Photo-journalist Nigel Brennan was kidnapped, along with a Canadian journalist, nine months ago.

Australia's Foreign Minister, Stephen Smith, says the media should not be giving the case publicity.

He says: "I think that prejudices our prospects of returning him.

"So, I'm certainly not going to go into detail of what generally or normally would be described as 'operational matters' when an Australian citizen has been kidnapped and frankly, his life is at risk."

Australia goes to the polls on August 21.
