Indonesian officer shot dead in Papua

An Indonesian police officer has been shot dead in the eastern province of Papua.

Police say he was killed in an ambush in the highlands district of Tingginambut.

The officer - a member of the paramilitary Mobile Brigade - is said to have been in the area to oversee local preparations for next month's Indonesian presidential election.

Police say they could not identify the attackers, or the numbers involved.

    Australia goes to the polls on August 21.
