Thousands seek aid after PNG rains

Thousands of people are reported to have lost their livelihoods in torrential rains in the Papua New Guinea north-eastern island province of New Ireland.
Disaster relief work is under way in New Ireland after heavy rain caused extensive damage.
The worst affected was the Kavieng district, where thousands are said to need help.
District administrator for Namatanai district, Eliuda Daulyn, says his area of New Ireland, with a population of about 60,000, has also been affected by the recent torrential rains.
"We have had the flooding on the west coast of central New Ireland," he said on Thursday.
"Red Cross has assisted us and the last lot of relief supplies went in there yesterday."
