French Polynesia bans Flosse for one year
Last Updated:
The French Polynesian appeals court has declared the former president, Gaston Flosse, ineligible to hold office for one year.
The judge also upheld a one year jail sentence and a $US12,000 fine, for attempting to use public funds to pay for a post-election victory party in 2004.
Mr Flosse lost the election and forwarded the bill to Oscar Temaru's victorious party, who refused to pay and lodged a complaint.
It's not yet known if Mr Flosse will appeal the latest ruling.
The ruling comes less than a week before an Mr Flosse's appearance before judges investigating a separate case, involving the misuse of over $US2 million through the territory's Office of Post of Telecommunications.
It's been confirmed that Mr Flosse's partner, Pascale Haiti, had been questioned and detained by police in Paris over the case.
Several other people, including Mr Flosse's secretary, are already being held as the investigation continues.
Australia goes to the polls on August 21.
