The Pakistani military says it has killed 60 militants as troops carry out a major offensive in the tribal region of South Waziristan.

Five soldiers have also been killed and 11 wounded.

The Pakistani military says troops are making slow progress because of the difficult terrain and the risk of landmines.

The soldiers are trying to push deep into South Waziristan.

The Taliban have responded with rockets and automatic weapon fire.

Air attack

But Pakistani war planes are continuing to bomb suspected Taliban hideouts.

Tens of thousands of civilians have been displaced by the fighting along the border with Afghanistan.

The Taliban are warning they will retaliate with terrorist attacks across Pakistan.

But the Pakistani government is refusing to back down and says there will be no peace deals.
