Fiji's immigration authorities are preventing a controversial figure at the centre of an alleged jobs scheme from leaving the country.

The scheme dates back to 2005.

It involves promises of jobs in Kuwait to 20,000 locals, in return for more than $3 million.

The national Immigration Department told the FijiLive news website that a director of security firm Meridian Services, Timoci Lolohea, will not be allowed to leave the country unless he is cleared by police.

Fijilive says it is believed Lolohea returned to Fiji last week to recruit people to work in Dubai.
