The Fiji government is supporting the establishment of a national Women's Federation to better coordinate the efforts of non-government organisations working in Fiji.

Fiji's Minister of Women, Social Welfare and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Jiko Luveni, says the federation will represent and safeguard women's human rights and interests.

She told Radio Australia such a group is needed because there are many non-government organisations (NGOs) with the same goals which are doing the same bits and pieces of the same projects.

"We need to coordinate all the work of the NGOs," she said.

"Also we recognise there are some NGOs that specialise in different areas...we would like NGOs specialising in the areas that they have strength in, so the women will know who to access when they need services."
