China open to closer PNG relations

Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has discussed bilateral relations with Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare.

Pacnews reports Mr Li says PNG, as the largest developing country in the South Pacific, has great influence over regional issues.

He says China and Papua New Guinea have complementary economies, and there is huge potential for cooperation.

In 2008, trade between the two countries $US860 million.

Mr Li says China also appreciates the PNG Government's adherence to the one China policy.
