Australia backs new US initiative on Burma
Last Updated:
Australia has welcomed American efforts to engage with Burma, saying that sanctions won't succeed in forcing the country's military to move towards democracy.
Australia's Trade Minister Simon Crean says Canberra both supports and encourages the new US initiative.
He was speaking on the sidelines of Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum talks in Singapore.
Mr Crean's comments come ahead of a meeting on Sunday between US president Barack Obama and leaders of all 10 Association of Southeast Asian Nations, including Burma's Prime Minister Thein Sein.
