China plays panda card in Singapore

China is to send two giant pandas to Singapore to mark next year's 20th anniversary of bilateral relations in the latest example of Beijing's "panda diplomacy.

The announcement was made by China's President Hu Jintao during a meeting with President S. R. Nathan of Singapore.

Local zoo authorities say the pandas, a male and female, would arrive in 2011 -- a year after the 20th anniversary -- and be on loan for 10 years.

President Hu Jintao is in Singapore to attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum summit.
