The Australian Football League has announced it will play its first-ever game in China.

The Brisbane Lions and Melbourne Demons will face off next year in Shanghai, as part of Australia's contribution to the international expo being staged there.

At the moment Australia's brand of football is only played by a handful of university students in China.

But the AFL is hoping that curiosity alone will help it fill the historic Jiangwan Stadium next year.
