More then 1000 firefighters are continuing efforts to contain dozens of bushfires in Australia's eastern state of New South Wales as record-breaking hot weather continues.

More than a quarter of the state is listed at the highest possible fire warning of catastrophic risk.

Kym Fuhrmann reports the Rural Fires Service is worried about blazes in Sydney's north-west, the Blue Mountains and the Hawksbury.

It's also working on fires in the state's north at Narrabri, Inverell, Glenn Innes and Severn. RFS spokesman Mark Sullivan expects a busy day.

"There will be over 1100 firefighters, with 400 fire trucks supported by 70 aircraft in action today," he said.

Overnight crews have been putting in containment lines around the major blazes. The RFS is urging people in areas where fires are burning to be vigilant and take steps to prepare their homes.
