American golfer John Daly is hoping a three-month lay-off won't affect his chances in this week's Australian Open in Sydney.

Daly, ranked 444th, hasn't played a competitive round since August, but will tee-off at the New South Wales Golf Club this Thursday.

The 43-year-old joins a field including Australians Geoff Ogilvy, Stuart Appleby and former champions John Senden and Aaron Baddeley.

Daly has a poor recent record in Australia but says he is grateful for fans' continued support.

"That's why I keep coming back, (because) I know one day I'm going to play good here," he said.
