The authorities in Sri Lanka say they intend to bring the losing candidate in the general election, General Sarath Fonseka, before a court martial.

General Fonseka was arrested last night and dragged from his office in Colombo by military police.

The government says he is being detained for breaking military regulations by holding discussions with politicans while serving in the army.

General Fonseka denies any wrongdoing.

His wife Anoma says she has no idea where he is and has appealed for help.

"He's a normal civilian - be reasonable," she said.

"I hope I can hear something about him. I appeal to everybody - please help me to find him."

Australia goes to the polls on August 21.
