Nearly 200 more arrests over Philippines massacre
Last Updated:
The Philippines has charged 197 more people with murder over a pre-election massacre in Maguindanao province in November, which left 57 dead.
Those charged include Andal Ampatuan Senior, formerly a provincial governor and ally of President Gloria Arroyo.
His son has already been charged with murder over the attack on a rival political family and journalists travelling with them.
The victims were systematically murdered and buried in shallow pits or dumped in grasslands just near the national highway in Maguindanao province, where Ampatuan Snr was governor.
The charges come as campaigning opened for the presidential elections.
Australia goes to the polls on August 21.
