UN to monitor Iran's nuclear enrichment
Last Updated:
The UN nuclear watchdog says that a team of its inspectors is in place in Iran to monitor Iran's plans to start enriching uranium to higher levels.
Tehran says it has begun to produce 20 per cent enriched uranium at its Natanz plant, in the presence of international inspectors.
The move follows an order from the Iranian President to increase the enrichment from the current five per cent to fuel a research reactor.
In a joint statement, the United States and France have said they'll press for strong new UN sanctions.
Meanwhile, Russia has said the enrichment move calls Iran's 'sincerity' into question.
Australia goes to the polls on August 21.
