Fiji has closed all schools as it braces for another cyclone.

People have been warned to expect Tropical Cyclone Tomas to hit over the weekend.

Fiji's meteorological service began watching the tropical depression as it developed near the Pacific French Territory of Wallis and Futuna overnight on Thursday.

The duty forecaster, Matt Boterhoven, says they have now upgraded it and issued a warning.

He said: "Now it's Tropical Cyclone Tomas. It's expected to continue to intensify over the next 24 to 48 hours.

"And we'll be issuing a tropical cyclone alert for the far north of the Fiji group for late Sunday."

Meteorologists are also watching an extreme weather system situated north of Vanuatu, which is expected to begin affecting Solomon Islands' weather by Sunday.

Australia goes to the polls on August 21.
