Fiji and Solomons prepare for two separate tropical cyclones
Last Updated:
Fiji and Solomon Islands are bracing for the arrival of two separate tropical cyclones.
Tropical Cyclone Ului is generating gale forces winds of over 200 kilometres an hour and is expected to hit the islands of Rennell and Bellona in the South of Solomon Islands on Sunday night.
The head of programmes at the Solomon Islands Disaster Management Office, Julian Makaa, says the five thousand people who live there have been told to get ready.
'We have been advising people to stock things up and prepare for the impact,' he says. 'That means saving water, food, basic medicines.'
In Fiji, emergency workers have also been preparing the northern province for Tropical Cyclone Tomas, which is expected to make landfall on Monday afternoon.
Australia goes to the polls on August 21.
