Thai protester say their numbers will grow to half a million

A massive political protest in Bangkok is in full swing, with an estimated 100,000 protesters turning up to demand the resignation of the government.

Protest organiser expect their numbers to grow at at least 500,000.

The ABC's Conor Duffy reports an army of redshirt supporters have stretched out for kilometres in a number of directions.

The supporters of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, known as the Reds, are demanding the resignation of the prime minister, chanting 'Abhisit, get out!'.

On Saturday night, the fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra addressed his supporters by phone.

He thanked them and told them to stay on the streets until the government falls.
