The Australian defence department has revealed that a sixth Australian soldier was wounded in a roadside bomb explosion in Afghanistan this week.

The defence department says the six Australians were travelling in a Bushmaster vehicle in the Chora Valley when it was hit by an improvised explosive device on Tuesday.

The department says the sixth soldier didn't initially seek help for his injuries because he wanted to complete his mission.

It says he waited until he was back in Tarin Kowt before notifying superiors.

He's been moved to the United Arab Emirates for rest and treatment.

Four of the other soldiers wounded in the blast will return to Australia soon for rehabilitation.

Australia goes to the polls on August 21.
