New Zealand's defence minister says the improved security environment in East Timor means Wellington can cut back the size of its military deployment there.

Wayne Mapp says the next rotation of Kiwi troops to East Timor will have only 75 personnel, just over half the size of earlier rotations of around 140.

The Australia-New Zealand International Stabilisation Force is one of the main international security operations in East Timor.

In January last year, Australia reduced its commitment by around 100 personnel.

The New Zealand Defence Force has been contributing a light infantry company to the ISF since May 2006.

Dr Mapp says New Zealand 's support for East Timor will focus on providing security and development assistance.
