America's top military commander says he expects some people will be killed because of the release of secret files on Afghanistan by the Australian born founder of WikiLeaks.

The Pentagon has called in the FBI to help investigate who leaked almost 90,000 files from the Afghanistan war to self proclaimed whistleblower group WikiLeaks.

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, has lashed out at the group's Australian founder Julian Assange.

"Mr Assange can say whatever he likes about the greater good he thinks he and his source are doing, but the truth is they might already have on their hands the blood of some young soldier, or that of an Afghan family," he said.

The Pentagon doesn't know how many more other files may have been leaked.
