Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott insists he's the underdog despite the Coalition being in an election-winning lead in the latest opinion poll.

Meanhwile Tony Abbott is campaigning on defence policy in Darwin today.

Tony Abbott has travelled to the marginal Labor-held seat of Solomon where he's visited a naval base.

He toured HMAS Maitland and spoke to sailors on board the navy patrol boat.

Mr Abbott will make defence policy announcements while in Darwin.

Liberal ranks have been buoyed by today's Nielsen poll.

It shows the Coalition in an election-winning lead on 52 per cent compared to Labor's 48 per cent.

In the preferred Prime Minister stakes, Tony Abbott has closed the gap, with Julia Gillard still ahead.
