More than 1,000 Burmese villagers have escaped into neighbouring Thailand after renewed fighting between Burma’s army and ethnic Karen rebels.

Witnesses and officials say those who have fled to Mae Sot join 200 others who fled late on Saturday when clashes erupted between the two groups for the second time this month.

Fighting broke out in two locations on November the 8th, a day after Burma’s first election in 20 years.

The choreographed election delivered victory to the military-backed Union Solidarity & Development Party.

The day after the election a splinter faction of the Karen group seized parts of the Burma town of Myawaddy.

More than 12,000 people poured into Mae Sot and five Thais were wounded when rocket-propelled grenades landed on the other side of the border.
