Women’s groups in Tonga are speaking out after claims the country’s new police minister was charged with assaulting his wife last September.
A report in the Solomon Star News says the charge against Viliami Latu, was later dropped because his wife refused to testify against him.
The report says Dr Latu was also charged with assaulting his wife and her sister in 2008, and that those charges were also dropped.
The head of the Women’s and Children’s Crisis Centre in Tonga, Ofa ki-levuka Guttenbeil Likiliki, says she will monitor closely the way Dr Latu moves the agenda of domestic violence forward.
She has accused the Tongan government of appointing Dr Latu in return for his support of the Prime Minister’s nomination for office.
