Fears for female political candidates in Sri Lanka

One of the largest groups representing women in Sri Lanka says many female candidates are being intimidated and threatened ahead of next month’s local elections

The Women in Media Collective is working closely with female candidates in five districts in the lead up to the local elections on March 17th.

The organisation’s executive director, Kumudini Samuel has told Radio Australia that many of the women have raised serious concerns for their safety.

Some have reported being threatened by politcal rivals and one candidate was hospitalised after being attacked by a male candidate from the same party.

The collective says it’s now working closely with election officials to monitor the situation.
