Vietnam, China on path to settle South China Sea dispute

Vietnam and China have agreed to take the first steps towards settling long-standing territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

At a meeting this week between China’s deputy foreign minister Zhang Zhijun and the Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, it was agreed they will sign an agreement on the guidelines to settle maritime issues.

Beijing and Hanoi have a long-standing dispute in the South China Sea over the sovereignty of the Paracel archipelago and the more southerly Spratlys.

However a timeframe for resolving the dispute was not reached.
