World Bank to provide emergency food supplies to Kiribati

The World Bank is providing 62,000 residents of Kiribati’s outer islands with emergency food supplies.

A $US2 million emergency food grant was agreed to during the Asian Development Bank’s annual meeting last week in Hanoi, between executives of the World Bank and Kiribati government officials.

The World Bank says Kiribati imports most of its foods and has been hit particularly hard by high and volatile food and energy prices.

It says people living in the Outer Islands are worst affected, where households already spend 50 per cent of their budget on food.
