The Australian Immigration Department has confirmed a detainee is protesting on the roof of the Darwin detention centre.
Rohingyan man, Habib Rahman says he was found to be a genuine refugee in May last year but is still waiting for security clearance and he’s frustrated by how long it’s taking for him to be released.
Other detainees say he’s been on a hunger strike since Monday and he’s moved to the roof of one of the buildings.
A spokesman for the Immigration Deparment says it is aware that a client at the Darwin facility is engaging in a rooftop protest.
The spokesman says healthcare, food and water are available.
The Department says these sorts of protests have no impact on the processing of an individual claim.
