Northern Marianas gets geothermal boost

The Northern Marianas have been given a $US1.26 million grant by the United States to develop geothermal energy.

The grant will fund an assessment of the resources available on the islands and will fund some initial exploration.

Once they have calculated what resources are available, private companies will be invited to come in and produce the energy.

Dr Colin Harvey, from the International Geothermal Association, has co-authored a report about the geothermal potential of Northern Marianas.Watch Full Movie Online Streaming Online and Download

He told Pacific Beat there had been very little exporation in the region.

“The only way they’re going to test that is by drilling and I would suspect that perhaps that funding you just mentioned is going to be used for some early exploration and drilling,” Dr Harvey said.
